Day 10 - Farmington, New Mexico to Flagstaff, Arizona

Tired or not, going to bed at 7:30 usually means we're up early—and we were. Very early, as in just getting light outside. After packing up, we headed to Ron's for a quick breakfast sandwich. Then it was time to gas up and head west on US 64 to Shiprock before turning south on US 491. Both highways alternated between smooth pavement and stretches badly in need of repair, but since they were both four lanes, the drive was easy enough.

US 491 brought us to Gallup and Interstate 40, along with the same Starbucks we had visited eight days earlier. Having recently driven this stretch of I-40, there wasn't much new to see. Today was simply about getting from one place to another. We made one stop to stretch our legs and another in Holbrook for a much-appreciated latte.

We arrived in Flagstaff too early to check into our hotel, so we continued another 20 miles west to Williams to take a look at the railroad hotel there. After seeing it, we decided we still preferred the other two we'd stayed at.

By then it was lunchtime, so we stopped at Goldie's Route 66 Diner. What a great choice! It had all the charm of an old-fashioned diner, complete with friendly service and a nostalgic atmosphere.

Haven't seen one of these in years

Heading back to Flagstaff, Barb called the hotel and found out we could check in early, which was a nice bonus. After getting settled, we planned a light dinner at Red Lobster with a 5:00 reservation, followed by what would hopefully be an early night.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our trip. Before heading home, we'll make one last detour to Chino Valley, Arizona, where we're looking forward to having breakfast with some very good friends from our days in Redmond, Oregon..
